Nervous about the dentist? Preparing for a visit in Cancun
Tell the team how you feel before your visit
Feeling anxious about a dental appointment is common. You may worry about discomfort, remember a difficult experience or feel unsure about what an examination involves. Telling the team when you book gives them a chance to understand your concerns and explain what to expect.
The American Dental Association recommends speaking up about dental anxiety, asking questions and agreeing on a signal if you need a break. Asking for an explanation is a normal part of your appointment.
What can you prepare?
Write down your concerns, when any symptoms began and what you would like to share about past dental visits. Bring details of medications or relevant medical conditions. You can ask what the examination includes, whether imaging is needed, what options exist and how any next steps would work.
A first appointment may focus on understanding your oral health and discussing priorities. It does not mean you have to agree to treatment immediately. Timing, techniques and measures to help you feel comfortable should be discussed with your clinician for your specific situation.
Agree on a way to communicate
You can ask the team to explain each step before they begin and agree on a hand signal to request a pause. If you feel uncomfortable, let them know during the visit. You should have enough information to take part in decisions about your care.
At Smart Smiles Cancun, we listen to your concerns and discuss available options. Contact us to request an assessment, and let us know if you would like to talk about dental anxiety before your visit.
